St. Johns Cultural Council Recognizing Outstanding Women in the Arts March 31st

The St Johns Cultural Council will hold the tenth annual Recognizing Outstanding Women in the Arts (ROWITA) Awards Celebration on Sunday, March 31st at 3:00p.m. in the Limelight Theatre located at 11 Old Mission Avenue, St. Augustine. The free event will honor the six women chosen to receive the 2019 Dr. Gail Pflaster ROWITA Award for their contributions to the artistic environment in St. Johns County. The 2019 honorees are Dr. Dorothy Barrett, Margaret Jimeson, Linda McAnarney, Regina Gayle Phillips, Dr. Susanne Schuenke and Jo Sinclair.
A reception will follow the celebration.

St. Joseph Academy’s 22nd Annual Spectacular Denim & Diamonds Auction

The annual SJA Spectacular Dinner Auction is St. Joseph Academy’s largest fundraiser. We rely on the proceeds from this event to sustain the exceptional program we offer our students.

The SJA Spectacular Auction brings us together as a community of faith, parents, grandparents, past parents, alumni and local businesses, to build community and to support our school.

Auction tickets are $50 per person and include admission to the auction, entertainment provided by auctioneer, Sherry Truhlar dinner, all drinks, dessert and coffee.

The theme and dress code is denim and diamonds!! Come one and all in western gear and there is no such thing as too much bling

VIP tables (the only reserved seating in the house) are reserved for title sponsors, Emerald sponsors, and Diamond sponsors. VIP tables for 10 are $600 and are limited to 20 tables.

Brown Bag Lunch: Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and St. Augustine

Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, the author of the classic The Yearling and known primarily for her relationship with the people of Cross Creek, Florida, also had very significant ties to St. Augustine. She bought her cottage in Crescent Beach in 1939, spending time in that locale in addition to Cross Creek. In 1942 she married Norton Baskin who owned and managed the Castle Warden Hotel in St. Augustine. These and the years that followed in St. Augustine and Crescent Beach were the years of Cross Creek, Cross Creek Cookery, the Zelma Cason lawsuit, World War II, and The Sojourner.

Barbara C. Wingo is an historian and attorney. She is the president of the Friends of the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Farm, Inc. She received her Ph.D. in United States history from Tulane University and worked in the General Counsel’s Office and as an adjunct history professor at the University of Florida for over 30 years. She is a member of the Historic Architectural Review Board of St. Augustine and is a past president of the St. Augustine Historical Society. She currently serves as an officer and as a board member of a number of history, historic preservation, law and music-related organizations.

This program is free and open to the public. Seating begins at 11:00 am and the presentation starts at 11:30 am. Light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Main Library St. Augustine. For additional information, please call the Main Library at 904.827.6940.

Noche de Festival: Pedro Menéndez 500th Birthday

The Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park and Historic Florida Militia will celebrate the 500th birthday of St. Augustine founder Pedro Menéndez de Aviles with the Noche de Festival gala on Saturday, February 16, 2019, from 6:30 to 11:00 p.m.

The evening will begin with a cocktail hour of Spanish tapas and sangria, accompanied by live traditional Spanish music and flamenco dancing.

Guests can watch their dinner being prepared by the world-renowned chef from Real Paella Catering. Beer and wine will be available with the meal. The night will end with dancing to the DJ music of Ancient City Sound Experience.
