On June 19 we kick off the Festival with our Let Freedom Sing! Concert in honor of the end of slavery in collaboration with the Ritz Chambers Players and Multi-Community Choirs, with two concerts at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre, one at 3 pm and one at 7.30 pm.
At 3 pm SAMF Artistic Director, Jorge Peña is joined by RCP’s artistic director, Terrance Paterson in a resounding concert featuring African American composers, spirituals and gospel music. Choir directors for these concerts are the renowned Deborah McDuffie and Dr. Herbert Vincent-Ricardo Pea’dro Jones. Works include words by Dr. Martin Luther King and Jr, and compositions by Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, Jesse Williams and Keith Hampton.
The 7.30 pm concert will feature music from Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Jessie Montgomery, Igor Stravinsky, and Beethoven’s Piano Concert No. 5 performed by internationally renowned pianist Terrence Wilson. An African-American Art exhibit curated by the Lincolnville Museum and the St. Augustine Art Association will take place between concerts.
The St. Augustine Music Festival continues at the Cathedral Basilica on June 24, 25 and 26 with music from Mozart, Prokofiev, Mendelssohn, Beethoven and guitarist Stephen Robinson performing music by Joaquin Rodrigo.
