The St. Johns County Parks & Recreation Department has partnered with Ancient City Astronomy Club (ACAC) for an educational evening that is out of this world! ACAC will lead an Astronomy 101 class that’s all about the night sky. Bring your friends and family to learn about the constellations, star names, and more. Telescopes and binoculars will be on-hand to view the moon, planets, and other objects. The program is free, but space is limited and registration is required. Join Flagler College art history professor Chris Balaschak for a talk exploring the impact of photography on the Impressionists. As evidenced in our current exhibition Edgar Degas: The Private Impressionist, Degas regularly took and explored the possibilities offered by this new technology. Professor Balaschak will discuss how Degas use of photography and its influence on his artwork. Tickets are $10 ($5.00 for museum members). Reservations are required. St. Johns County’s Poly Drug Task Force is holding a town hall on May 15th at 6 PM at The Armory on San Marco in St. Augustine concentrating on Fentanyl, the negative impact it has made in our county, and the prevention efforts we are making that community members can become involved in. It’s going to be an amazing, educational event!
Welcome to the Furry Paws Festival. We are raising awareness and donations for K9s for Warriors while having a fun community day with activities, food trucks, canine demonstrations, face painting and entertainment. Area businesses and sponsors will be showcasing what they can provide to the community. Admission is free, but donations for K9s for Warriors are certainly encouraged.

Children aged 5 – 14 are invited to join Lightner Museum educators in exploring the portraits and self-portraits shown in our special Edgar Degas: The Private Impressionist exhibition. Educators will discuss portraiture alongside some of Degas’ favored drawing media. This informative talk will be followed by an enjoyable self-portrait chalk-drawing activity. Little Lightners (ages 5 – 9 accompanied by an adult) will meet from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. and Lightner Leaders (ages 10 – 14) will meet from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 for children with an additional $5 fee for parents living outside of St. Johns County. Attendees of this informative look at sculpture will be engaged in truly looking at and understanding this 3-dimensional art form. Little Lightners (ages 5 – 9 accompanied by an adult) will meet from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. to look at different types of sculpture to appreciate the stories being told. The Lightner Leaders program (designed for older kids ages 10 – 14) will meet from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. to truly look at and comprehend the types and processes for creating sculpture. Each tour will be followed by an enjoyable model making activity. Tickets are $5 and reservations are required.
