Exhibition – Edgar Degas: The Private Impressionist – Works on Paper by the Artist and His Circle

A rare look at the works of pioneering artist Edgar Degas comes to St. Augustine’s Lightner Museum in Edgar Degas: The Private Impressionist – Works on Paper by the Artist and His Circle. Edgar Degas, one of the leading lights of the 19th-century art scene, is best known for his enchanting paintings of ballet dancers on and off the stage. But little is widely known about the enigmatic artist’s life and personality. Featuring over fifty original works by Degas, The Lightner Museum offers unique insights into Degas’ inner world and the opportunity to see rarely exhibited works from the private collection of curator Robert Flynn Johnson.

Edgar Degas: The Private Impressionist is on view at the Lightner from April 12 – June 16, 2019. Our limited-engagement showing is free for museum members or for $5 above the price of museum admission. For more information visit LightnerMuseum.org.

Lightner Learning Lab – Drawing Like Degas

Children aged 5 – 14 are invited to join Lightner Museum educators in exploring the portraits and self-portraits shown in our special Edgar Degas: The Private Impressionist exhibition. Educators will discuss portraiture alongside some of Degas’ favored drawing media.  This informative talk will be followed by an enjoyable self-portrait chalk-drawing activity. Little Lightners (ages 5 – 9 accompanied by an adult) will meet from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. and Lightner Leaders (ages 10 – 14) will meet from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 for children with an additional $5 fee for parents living outside of St. Johns County. Reservations are required and space is limited. For tickets and more information visit LightnerMuseum.org.

Lightner After Hours

Discover Otto Lightner’s Victorian Era curiosities and nature-inspired collection while listening to the folksy sounds of local St. Augustine duo The Willowwacks. Given that a “Willowwack” is a secluded spot in the woods, this month we’ll celebrate Spring’s arrival and outdoor living with campsite inspired light hors d’oeuvres and libations. Please join us in the lobby of our historic museum on Thursday, March 28 from 6 to 8 pm.

This event is free and open to the public. Attendees may enter at the Granada Street courtyard entrance located across from Flagler Auditorium.

The Lightner Museum is a non-profit cultural institution sustained by the generous support of individuals, businesses, and sponsors.  Donations are appreciated.

Lightner After Hours is a held the last Thursday of each month, and is funded in part by the Tourist Development Council of St. Johns County.

Butterfield Garage Gallery March Feature Artist is Jan Miller, Founder of the Gallery.

An Artist Talk, First Friday March 1st, at 6pm is an opportunity to hear Jan speak of her long storied career in the arts, and see some of her newest works of whimsy.
Jan seamlessly combines leadership qualities with nurturing her own creative Art Spirit. While much of her early career was spent creating beautifully composed and rendered acrylic still life’s, Jan’s current work is filled with playfulness. Characters created out of gourds, imaginative hanging characters, all with the skill of a master painter.
Jan has been an exhibiting artist for over 45 years. She has won many awards, and her works hang in museums and corporate collections throughout the United States. Jan has also been an instrumental member of the arts community in St. Augustine. She was one of several artists who initiated First Friday Art Walks in St. Augustine, served in leadership positions with Art Galleries of St. Augustine (AGOSA), The Florida Artists Group, (a statewide professional artists organization) and is a recipient of the St. Johns Cultural Council’s ROWITA Award for her contributions to the arts in St. Augustine.
She says “I have worked to promote and nurture the amazingly talented and diverse art scene in St. Augustine by offering exhibition space to many of our most prominent artists and to network with other galleries in order to keep it vibrant, and to bring new and upcoming artists to the public.”
