Hasan Kwame Jeffries on “American Amnesia”
March 28, 2019 @ 6:00 pm
FreeOn March 28 at 6 p.m. in the Flagler Room on Flagler College’s campus, Hasan Kwame Jeffries, Ph.D., associate professor at The Ohio State University, will present to the public “American Amnesia: Why We Hate History and Love Nostalgia.” The event is free.
“We have been miseducating our students to a criminal extent,” said Jeffries.
He has his bachelor’s in history from Morehouse College and his master’s in American history from Duke University. He also completed his doctoral studies in American history with a concentration in African-American history at Duke University.
Jeffries serves as a guest speaker at various conferences, on tv programs and in the media as he is considered a topic expert in African-American history and contemporary black politics. He has completed many fellowships including a Ford Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellowship.
“We’re not helping students understand the world in which we live,” he said. He is expected to stress the importance of teaching students how to navigate today’s issues and understand their place in society’s progression forward.
His publications include “Bloody Lowndes: Civil Rights and Black Power in Alabama’s Black Belt” and “Stealing Home: Ebbets Field and Black Working Class Life in Post-Civil Rights New York,” which is a work in progress.
Jeffries is visiting Flagler College at the invitation of the Office of Academic Affairs, through Kenan Distinguished Professor of History Michael Butler, Ph.D.
